Mumbai enjoys the unique distinction of being one of the few modern cities of India where the vision of the past is preserved in the present with history on one side and technological break-throughs of the future on the other. The heritage legislation for Greater Bombay 1995 covered a vast range of building typologies that were found worthy of preservation.
574 heritage buildings, including several forts, 14 milestones and 18 precincts and some open spaces listed in Mumbai. The concern for heritage conservation has grown in the last two years since a fire caused by a short circuit gutted the elegant municipal hall designed in the 1850's. |
Starting 2002, the University of Mumbai has started a three-year Bachelor course in Heritage Management.
"Mumbai is rich in architecture," says Savia Viegas, a professor of Indian Culture at Mumbai's KC College. She believes that heritage is a resource which will not endure if neglected. "Most of the future conflicts in the world will be focussed on heritage structures," she says. Even though there are other places in Mumbai where you can get old heritage items, Just Art..Etc has carved a unique niche for itself on Mumbai's heritage map. Bandra itself where Just Art..Etc is located has a rich Heritage background and locations, including Castella de Aguada, the once proud Portuguese fort at Land's End, Mount Mary Church and many others. |
